From a lakeshore amble to the exposed scramble of Striding Edge, every route here is led by qualified mountain leaders who know which ridge to avoid in the wind — and which one to save for the clear day.
Ullswater sits at the foot of some of the finest walking in the Lake District — Helvellyn, Fairfield, and the quieter fells above Patterdale and Martindale, all reachable without a long drive to a car park. The lake itself has its own 20-mile circular route, the Ullswater Way, which means there's a genuine walk here for every day of a week's stay, not just one big one.
What The Concierge adds is the judgement: which route suits the group in front of us, which day the weather actually allows a ridge walk, and which qualified leader is free to take you up it. On a day the fells don't cooperate, the lake usually still does.
Graded from a first fell to a full ridge day, and everything that sits between them.
Half-day to full-day routes graded to the group, from Aira Force woodland to the high ridges above Patterdale. Pace and turnaround times set by whoever's slowest, not whoever's fastest.
Helvellyn via Striding Edge — a full day on the ridge with a Mountain Leader, finishing at the summit cairn.
The full 20-mile lake circuit broken into comfortable daily stages, with a steamer ride back to base if legs give out before the path does.
Ullswater Way in four — Glenridding to Pooley Bridge and back, split across two rest days.
Map-and-compass tuition for those who want to walk unguided afterwards, or guided fell-running routes for those training for something bigger.
Off the path — a half-day navigation course on Place Fell, small groups only.
For guests using Westfield as a base for something longer — a section of the Coast to Coast, or a self-contained two- or three-day loop through Martindale and Boredale.
Two-day Martindale loop — quiet fells, no crowds, a wild-camp option for the committed.
Flat, well-surfaced lakeshore paths for guests who want the view without the ascent — pushchair and less-mobile-friendly options included.
Aira Force & the lakeshore — a gentle two-hour loop, waterfall included, no boots required.
An early start (or a late finish) to catch the fells with nobody else on them — headtorches and flasks provided.
Summit for sunrise — a short, steep pre-dawn climb timed to the season's actual sunrise.
| Grade | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Lakeshore paths, well-surfaced, minimal ascent. | Families, first-timers, a rest-day leg-stretch. |
| Moderate | Proper fell paths, several hours, some steep sections. | Regular walkers wanting a full day out. |
| Challenging | Exposed ridgelines, scrambling, weather-dependent. | Experienced walkers with a head for heights. |
For the easier routes, trainers are usually fine. For anything graded moderate or above, proper boots matter — we can point you to local hire in Ambleside or Keswick if you haven't brought your own.
We build a lower-level alternative into the plan from the start. Striding Edge in particular gets called off in high wind or ice — the leader makes that call on the day, not us.
Yes — it's one of the more common requests. A guided walk can split into a fast group and a steady group and still finish at the same pub. Tell us about your group and we'll grade the route accordingly.
Sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and water skiing on Ullswater.
Rock climbing, ghyll scrambling and via ferrata at Honister.
Full day-by-day plans built from these modules, ready to adjust.
Tell us about the trip you want and we'll build the route.
